POSITIVE ACTIVITY FOR SHANNON

In April last year, a petition was put through the European Parliament against the use of Shannon, and other civilian airports in Europe, by military aircraft and personnel. The complaint was on the grounds that such use created a threat of terrorism and acts of war which did not previously exist, thereby endangering the lives of ordinary citizens using the airport or living nearby. Just before xmas, the petition was accepted as an admissable complaint, and has been passed on to the relevant committee. You can support this petition now, without any lengthy waiting process, to help to ensure its success. Either write and add your name to the current statement, Or write to add your own comments, to; COMMITTEE FOR FREEDOMS, RIGHTS, JUSTICE & FOREIGN AFFAIRS, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, RUE WIERTZ, B.1047 BRUSSELS. You must quote reference number 409/2003 when you write. Petition follows:-

SUBJECT;
Protection of children resident in the E.U. from acts of war and terrorism.

TEXT;
As a European resident in a formerly neutral member state, I am very concerned by the involvement of certain E.U. countries in the current conflict in the Middle East.I feel that countries such as Ireland and Spain,who had no previous argument with activists in Asia and the Middle East,have now made their citizens into direct targets for terrorism.Since
the conflict is not yet satisfactorily resolved,and there is a threat of unrest in Syria and perhaps North Korea,the possibility of a nuclear attack hovers over us.Even a small-scale nuclear or chemical device set off in one European country could pose a threat to those in neighbouring countries-we need only to remember the radioactive sheep in Wales after the Chernobyl disaster. Military installations and airports used by the military,are an obvious target.There are schools close to many of these facilities. I believe that the European Union is commited to ensuring the safety and
wellbeing of all its citizens,especially the children of Europe. Therefore surely there must be some legislation to restrict the actions of member states where that action will endanger the lives of its citizens. That being the case,I would implore the European Parliament to use that legislation now o protect my children,and every other child in our Community. If such legislation does not yet exist,I would ask the European Parliament to make that law now. In the meantime,I hope that the Parliament will exert whatever influence it can on member states to ensure that they allow their citizens to live in peace and safety.
