MINUTES OF LAST FORUM 16/02/04 HELD AT CREEDON'S HOTEL, INCHIGEELAGH
Apologies; Michael Hobbs, Brian O'Donoghue
Agenda; Postcards, Amnesty fundraiser, CSF fundraiser,
CHASE, CSF conference, Finances, Demo in Dublin.
Postcard campaign;
It was reported that both Amnesty and AfrI had taken 1000 cards each,
with Amnesty Clonakilty taking a further 100. Labels had been produced
to stick onto the blank cards, to address them to factories, local councils,
TDs etc. Help was requested in distributing cards, and also in setting
up a press release and launch to tie in with the launch of the latest
AfrI report, It was suggested that local factories should be monitored
to find out who they are selling to, and that copies of the card could
be sent to DJs such as Gerry Ryan, asking them to contact Mary Harney
and get her reactions.
Amnesty fundraiser;
A fundraiser for Amnesty Cork was announced, at Cyprus Avenue, Cork,
on 25th March, with Brian O'Donoghue given as a contact 087 273 8665.
CSF fundraiser;
Finaldetails were given for our own latestfundraiser. Local group The
Timelords are to play at Connoly's of Leap on Friday 12th March, and
will split the door with us 50/50. Help was requested for manning the
door, and it was suggested that conference invitations could be given
out in place of tickets.
CHASE;
There was a wide-ranging discussion about the Cork Harbour incinerator.
Main points;
Anti-incinerator campaign (CHASE) has information sheets for those wishing
to write to the press, it was stressed that this was a very important
thing to do.
It was also stressed that there is already a small-scale incinerator
there, and pollution levels have been high for some time, affecting
plant and animal health. Journalist Robert Allen was to be speaking
at UCC. Since he was involved in the successful campaign to stop an
incinerator at Youghal, it was proposed that someone should attend his
lecture to ask his advice about Cork Harbour, and also to invite him
to speak on the subject at our conference.
There is supposed to be a stipulation that waste WILL NOT be imported
to the incinerator from abroad. we wondered how exactly that would be
monitored.
Conference;
A plea was put out to find more speakers, and while several people had
useful suggestions, it was pointed out that it is important for each
individual to invite those that THEY think should be there, rather than
leaving the organization to a small group, as would be done in a more
traditional setup. It was pointed out that the forum should be a product
of all those taking part. Help was also sought in setting up the café,
and
kids area, although it was hoped that the kids area may not be necessary.
Lily agreed to ask Sangre Latino to provide the music for the Saturday
night. A date was set for the next events group meeting, 29th Feb in
Ballingeary.
Finances;
An account needs to be opened, so that we can accept cheques as payment
at events, and to keep funds safe. Marye and Axel had paid for our public
liability insurance out of their own pockets, and should now be repaid.
The people's jam-jar was handed over to them until an account could
be opened.
Lily and Joe agreed to check out the relative merits of bank, post office
and credit union accounts, and report back to the next meeting.
Dublin Demo;
It was announced that there wqould be a big demonstration in Dublin
on 20th March, to mark the first anniversary of the Iraq invasion. Calls
were made for local action (details since received.see below).
NEXT MEETING 15th March at Future Forests, at
7p.m.see events page.
